But I need to first apply for an ITIN for my spouse so I have to file an extension. But the efiled extension has been rejected because my spouse does not have a SSN or an ITIN. What can we do now?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Answer:<\/strong>\u00a0You file\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/f4868.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Form 4868<\/a>\u00a0by mail. In the field for the spouse&#8217;s SSN, write &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/Individuals\/General-ITIN-Information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ITIN<\/a>\u00a0to be requested.&#8221; Since you\u2019re the US citizen, you should be the primary taxpayer, so the extension and any payment that goes with it, will reference your SSN.
