After all, taxes can be a bit of a drag, but they don&#8217;t have to be complicated!<\/p>\n<p>So, you filed your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-1040\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forms 1040<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-1040-sr#:~:text=Form%201040%2DSR%20is%20available,instructions%20as%20Form%201040%20does.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1040-SR<\/a>, right? If so, you probably noticed a box asking if you got any digital assets (like cryptocurrencies) as a reward, payment, or just gave &#8217;em a little shuffle (think sales, exchanges, or transfers). If you&#8217;re unsure what that means, here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sold some digital assets<\/li>\n<li>Got digital assets for your goods or services (fancy, huh?)<\/li>\n<li>Received or transferred digital assets without a real &#8220;gift&#8221; vibe (we see you, sneaky sneaks)<\/li>\n<li>Mined or staked digital assets (because who doesn&#8217;t love digital treasure?)<\/li>\n<li>Received new digital assets from a hard fork (sounds painful, but it&#8217;s not)<\/li>\n<li>Traded digital assets for stuff or other digital assets (swapsies!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, if you checked that &#8220;yes&#8221; box, it&#8217;s time to report all that sweet, sweet income related to the digital asset transactions. Here&#8217;s how:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-8949#:~:text=Use%20Form%208949%20to%20reconcile,will%20be%20calculated%20in%20aggregate.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Form 8949<\/a> to calculate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/taxtopics\/tc409#:~:text=You%20have%20a%20capital%20gain,%2C%20aren't%20tax%20deductible.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">capital gains or losses<\/a> and report it on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-schedule-d-form-1040\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schedule D (Form 1040)<\/a>. Easy peasy!<\/li>\n<li>If your digital asset transaction was a gift, the giver\/donor may need to file <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-709#:~:text=Use%20Form%20709%20to%20report,transferred%20during%20the%20transferor's%20lifetime.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Form 709<\/a> (the United States Gift Tax Return) &#8211; if gift exceeds the annual threshold. It&#8217;s like a thank-you note to the IRS!<\/li>\n<li>If you got digital assets for your job or business, report the income just like you would any other. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-form-w-2\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">W-2 wages<\/a> go on Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 1a, and business-related stuff goes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/forms-pubs\/about-schedule-c-form-1040#:~:text=Use%20Schedule%20C%20(Form%201040,is%20for%20income%20or%20profit.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schedule C<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Need more info?
